Charlie Woods has made his choice, and it’s a decision that signals both independence and ambition. For months, speculation swirled around whether the 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods would follow his father’s legendary path to Stanford. Instead, Charlie announced Tuesday that he will commit to Florida State University, choosing to stay in the Sunshine State and begin carving out a collegiate journey that is distinctly his own.

The Stanford storyline was almost too perfect. Tiger Woods enrolled there in 1994 on a scholarship, majoring in economics and swiftly building one of the most decorated collegiate careers in golf history. He won eight tournaments in 1996, was named the 1995 Male Freshman of the Year, and captured the 1996 NCAA individual championship, earning National Player of the Year honors. His name still resonates in Stanford’s Hall of Fame, and Charlie’s older sister, Sam, currently attends the university.

But Charlie’s decision signals a departure from expectation. According to The Benjamin School head golf coach Toby Harbeck, the younger Woods had long expressed an interest in staying in the Southeast rather than relocating across the country. Geography, comfort, and fit all appear to have factored into the choice. In stepping away from Stanford, Charlie has made it clear that legacy alone would not dictate his future.

A Rising Star Staying Close to Home

Currently a junior at The Benjamin School in Florida, Charlie has steadily elevated his game. He claimed a state title while firing a team-best 68, an eye-catching performance that reinforced his development as a serious prospect. Florida State head golf coach Trey Jones was in attendance that day, observing closely. Now, Jones has secured one of the most-watched young players in the country in what amounts to a major recruiting win for the Seminoles.

Charlie will join Miles Russell, the No. 1 player in the American Junior Golf Association Rankings, in a highly anticipated 2027 recruiting class. The program’s pedigree speaks for itself. Florida State alumni include major champions and PGA Tour standouts such as Brooks Koepka, Paul Azinger, and Daniel Berger. The environment promises competition, visibility, and a developmental structure that can shape professional aspirations.

Guided by Experience, Focused on Identity

Tiger Woods has taken an active but measured role in his son’s recruitment. He described the process as enjoyable, emphasizing the importance of allowing Charlie to explore opportunities that arise from his own performance. The message from those around him has remained consistent: the goal is not to replicate Tiger’s path, but to support Charlie in forging his own.

Harbeck summarized that philosophy succinctly: Charlie is encouraged to be Charlie, not Tiger.

With his commitment now official, the conversation shifts from possibility to preparation. Florida State gains a marquee recruit. Charlie Woods gains a platform to develop, compete, and define his collegiate career on his own terms. The comparisons will inevitably follow, but the next chapter belongs to him alone.
