Sergio Garcia Makes His Case for Ryder Cup Over Dinner

Sergio Garcia might be Europe’s all-time Ryder Cup points leader, but in 2025, that resume doesn’t come with a free pass. He is currently sitting at 174th on the European team standings. The 45-year-old Spaniard is well outside the automatic qualification zone and staring down the barrel of one final hope: a captain’s pick from Luke Donald.

Garcia isn’t just banking on nostalgia. He’s been busy—playing, winning, and yes, even dining with the man who holds his Ryder Cup fate in his hands.

Munich Misstep, But Not a Dealbreaker

Last week’s BMW International Open in Germany offered Garcia a perfect chance to prove he still belongs. Instead, he missed the cut, while Donald, also in the field, took note. Still, one poor showing likely won’t be a death blow, especially when there’s a bigger game being played off the course.

At LIV Golf Andalucia, Garcia told Golf Digest that he’s still “part of the equation.” With six captain’s picks available, the door isn’t closed. However, it’s not entirely open. “I need to keep improving my game,” Garcia said. “That’s all I can do.”

Garcia is doing more than grinding on the course, he’s working the room. Last week, he sat down with Donald for dinner, a quiet and strategic move that speaks volumes. While Donald didn’t serve up a Hollywood-style pep talk, the message was unmistakable: if Garcia wants in, he’ll have to prove it.

“He was like, I just want you to get back to playing like you were before the Masters,” Garcia said. “I told him that’s what I’m working on.”

The Global Resumé That’s Hard to Ignore

Garcia’s recent form hasn’t gone unnoticed. Early in 2025, he rattled off a fourth-place finish in Macau, won LIV Golf Hong Kong, and placed third at LIV Golf Miami.

That run helped earn him a spot in next week’s British Open at Royal Portrush via a new exemption route for top LIV performers. Donald is clearly watching. And he’s seeing a player still capable of making noise on the biggest stages.

Ryder Cup automatic qualification spots dwindling and official points opportunities are running out. Royal Portrush could be Garcia’s last real chance to make a statement. But ask Garcia if he feels any extra pressure? “No,” he said. “There’s always high motivation.” Maybe not pressure, but let’s call it what it is: a final audition.
