Discussions and Decisions
Organizers at TMRW Sports did not hide the fact that they wanted Korda involved. Rufus Hack, the president of golf for Woods’ and McIlroy’s company, addressed the media directly about the situation. According to Golfweek, Hack confirmed that extensive talks took place before the final call was made. “We had lots of conversations with Nelly and her team, and effectively the decision was made that she wasn’t going to participate in Season 1,” Hack said during the WTGL media day. The league is not giving up on her just yet. Hack made it clear that the relationship remains strong and that future participation is still a possibility. “The door is certainly not closed for season two and beyond, and we continue to have very constructive conversations,” he told reporters, adding, “And we would love Nelly to be part of WTGL at some point.”
Despite Korda’s absence, the league has assembled a deep field. The roster features 25 of the world’s best golfers, including major champions and fan favorites like Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie West. Yahoo Sports reports that 10 players now sitting within the top 25 world rankings are part of the group. Hack emphasized the quality of the remaining lineup to reassure fans. “We’ve got 25 of the world’s best golfers, huge personalities, as well as world-class players, and we’re really focused on who we have got here,” he stated. Founding teams such as New York Golf Club and Los Angeles Golf Club will compete when the first season starts on Nov 8.
Korda’s own stance on the league has been complex. In comments reported by Golfweek back in January, she expressed a desire for a mixed-gender format where men and women compete together. She noted that the current setup misses a unique opportunity. “It would have been the first time that men and women were on the same playing field, playing for the same amount of money,” Korda said at the time. She called the separation of the leagues “a huge and unbelievable miss” in her view. Yet, she also acknowledged the value of the women’s opportunity. “But I also think it’s great that we are getting this opportunity, so those are my mixed feelings,” she added. Her decision to sit out Season 1 reflects these complicated views on how the sport should evolve.
