The landscape of professional golf shifted dramatically on Wednesday as the deadline for players to commit to LIV Golf 2.0 looms. With the league’s future hanging in the balance, 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen announced his departure to join the DP World Tour for the 2027 season. This move comes just days before the Sunday, October 25 deadline, leaving the status of the Saudi-backed circuit uncertain. As reported by Golf Digest, Oosthuizen is the latest major champion to walk away, signaling a potential collapse for a league that filed for bankruptcy recently.
The exodus from LIV Golf appears to be accelerating as the deadline approaches. According to Golf Digest, Oosthuizen posted a message on social media Wednesday confirming his exit. He cited concerns over the upcoming schedule as the primary driver for his decision. “I feel I have a few more years of good, competitive golf left in me, and the only way to be really sharp and competitive is through a schedule I control,” Oosthuizen’s account read. He had been a member since the league’s inception in the summer of 2022 and served as captain of the Southern Guards GC, the all-South African team.
While Oosthuizen reflected on his past choices, the reality of the current situation weighs heavily. “Five years ago, I made one of the best decisions of my life, moving away from the traditional golf world and into something very special with LIV Golf and Southern Guards GC,” his social media post stated. Despite his time in the league, he did not secure a win on the circuit, though he did capture two tournaments in South Africa in December 2023. His struggles in major championships during his LIV tenure were notable; after three top-three finishes in 2021, he made only two cuts in the big four majors over the next five years.
Oosthuizen is not alone in his decision to leave. Golf Digest reports that Jon Rahm has already reached a separation agreement with LIV. Reports suggest Joaquin Niemann is also considering leaving. The situation is dire for the league, as a court recently rejected more than a dozen player contracts, including those of Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Bubba Watson, and Ian Poulter. Only four players have publicly committed to the league this week, leaving the organization in a precarious position.
PGA Tour Expands Korn Ferry Opportunities
While LIV Golf faces an existential crisis, the PGA Tour is aggressively expanding its developmental pathway. On Wednesday, the PGA Tour revealed the 2027 Korn Ferry Tour schedule, which covers 25 events in 15 states and seven countries, according to Yahoo Sports. The most significant change is the number of promotions available. The 2027 season will offer 40 PGA Tour cards, doubling the current model which promotes 20 players annually. Under this new arrangement, the top 10 players on the points list secure spots in the PGA Tour Championship Series, whereas membership in the PGA Tour Challenger Series goes to the subsequent 30 players.
Korn Ferry Tour President Alex Baldwin emphasized the impact of this expansion. “The 2027 Korn Ferry Tour Season will be the most competitive season in our Tour’s history,” Baldwin said in a statement. He added that the move aligns with the organization’s core goals. “This reinforces our mission to identify, prepare, and transition the game’s next generation of stars as these players emerge on the PGA Tour,” Baldwin noted. Golf Channel will broadcast 10 events during the 2027 schedule, including the regular-season finale, the AdventHealth Championship held August 19-22, and all four Korn Ferry Tour Finals events.
The schedule also introduces a new title sponsor, Visa, for the Visa Open in Bogota, Colombia, running from February 11-14. The Finals will see field sizes decrease as the year progresses. The final event, the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, will feature the top 60 players on the points list. “With a new event, new host venues, and a refreshed schedule, our membership will be tested throughout the season as they compete to reach golf’s highest level,” Baldwin said.
The TGL Roster Takes Shape
Amidst the turmoil in traditional tours, the tech-focused TGL league is solidifying its lineup for the 2027 campaign. Golf Monthly states that every one of the seven TGL sides has released their full rosters. The league features a mix of established stars and new talent. Returning pros include Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Tommy Fleetwood. New signings for the upcoming season include Ryan Fox, Keith Mitchell, and Jackson Koivun. This full roster reveal sets the stage for the third season of the indoor golf league, which aims to blend high-tech competition with elite player talent.
While the TGL prepares for its next chapter, the traditional game continues to evolve. By serving as a gateway to major championships, the Hong Kong Open on the Asian Tour grants its winner invitations to The Masters and The Open Championship in 2027. Although the LIV situation remains unresolved and the field is fluid, seven of the world’s top-10 players plan to compete in the 2026 Hero World Challenge this December.
The divergence between the struggling LIV league and the expanding PGA Tour system highlights a clear shift in the professional golf ecosystem. Oosthuizen’s departure, coupled with the mass exodus of other top players, suggests the LIV 2.0 model may not survive the Sunday deadline. Conversely, the PGA Tour’s doubling of Korn Ferry promotions demonstrates a commitment to strengthening its pipeline and rewarding performance through a more robust competitive structure. The next few days will determine the fate of the league that once promised to revolutionize the sport.
As the clock ticks toward the Sunday, October 25 deadline, the golf world waits to see if any more players will follow Oosthuizen’s lead. The PGA Tour’s 2027 schedule is already set, with the Bahamas Golf Classic kicking off the season on January 17. Until then, the uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf remains the dominant story in the game.
