Housing Plans Take Over 100 Year Old Golf Course in Controversial Deal

It’s the end of an era in Oxford. After 118 years, North Oxford Golf Club — a course described as “a jewel” and a “wonderful relaxing quality” retreat between the city and the Cotswolds — will close its doors for good on October 31. And what’s replacing it? Not another golf course, not a green sanctuary — but 1,180 new homes spearheaded by Oxford University, Merton College, and Exeter College.

From Fairways to Housing Blocks

The decision came after the University and colleges put £4.3 million on the table, an offer that the club’s members ultimately accepted. By November, golfers will have to vacate and clear the way for bulldozers and blueprints.

North Oxford Golf Club was a place where strategy mattered more than power, and where the grounds were cared for meticulously for over a century. Soon, all of that will be a memory.

The club’s own website captures the heartbreak perfectly: “An enjoyable, rewarding and memorable experience, which requires strategy rather than strength… North Oxford Golf Club is over a century old and has wonderful matured grounds, that have been preserved and cared for throughout the decades.” That heritage will be wiped away in less than two months.

Members Push Back, But Lose the Battle

As you’d expect, the news hasn’t gone down smoothly. Members launched a campaign to halt the closure, citing the mental and social benefits the club has brought to the community.

Joint-Lady Captain Jill Northover didn’t hold back, telling This Is Oxfordshire: “The mental side of this closure for members is far reaching, and detrimental to health. It has been met with astonishment that a beautiful green space is being destroyed by the University who plan to build housing on the site. The green land between Oxford and Kidlington will no longer exist… I feel, as do members of the club, that it’s almost criminal that such a beautiful place is going to be destroyed by the greed of Oxford University.”

That’s a gut punch. To many, this isn’t just about golf. It’s about the loss of open green space in a city already pressed for breathing room. It’s about history, community, and tradition being sacrificed on the altar of development.

North Oxford Golf Club will welcome its final groups of players this fall before the course is shut down forever.
