Italian golfer Andrea Pavan is counting his blessings after a terrifying accident that could have ended his career, or worse, just days before the South African Open.

The 36-year-old DP World Tour professional has now been discharged from the hospital following what many are calling a “freak accident” involving an elevator at private accommodation ahead of last week’s tournament. What began as a routine moment quickly turned into a nightmare when Pavan stepped toward a lift after its doors opened, unaware that the elevator car had not yet arrived. Instead of stepping into the cabin, Pavan fell down the empty shaft, plunging an estimated two to three floors.

The fall left him with multiple injuries that required immediate medical attention and surgery. Doctors later operated on both his shoulder and back as part of efforts to stabilize his condition and begin the long process of recovery.

According to reports, the accident occurred when the elevator doors opened despite the lift car not being in place. When Pavan stepped forward expecting the elevator to be there, he instead dropped into the shaft below.

Incidents involving elevator malfunctions are rare but can be extremely dangerous, and in Pavan’s case, the consequences were severe. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where medical teams worked quickly to treat his injuries.

The DP World Tour player underwent surgery on his shoulder and back soon after. Early concerns surrounded the extent of the trauma, especially given the height of the fall and the potential for spinal injuries. But in the days following the accident, encouraging news began to emerge.

Pavan Shares Hopeful Update From Recovery

In a message shared on social media, Pavan confirmed that he has now been discharged from the hospital and moved into nearby accommodation, where he will continue his rehabilitation.

“Today was a big day,” he wrote. “I got discharged from the hospital to continue my rehab at an accommodation nearby, kindly set up by the Rupert family.” Despite the seriousness of the fall, Pavan said he is already able to walk and perform basic activities, an outcome that has left him deeply grateful.

“It truly feels like a miracle to be able to walk and start to do some basic activities, although at a very slow and careful pace.”

He also expressed heartfelt thanks to the doctors, surgeons, nurses, and staff at Mediclinic who helped guide his treatment during the most critical stage of his recovery.

Pavan extended special appreciation to officials from the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour who assisted him throughout the ordeal, as well as fellow players and caddies who visited him in intensive care during the South African Open.

“It truly felt like a big family,” he said.

Golf Community Rallies Around the Injured Star

Beyond the hospital, support for Pavan has poured in from across the golf world. Friends, family members, fans, and sponsors have all reached out during his recovery, something the Italian golfer says has meant more than he can express.

“My heart is overwhelmed with love and joy,” Pavan wrote in his message. “God has answered many prayers; it truly feels like His hand is on my recovery.”

The road ahead remains long. Doctors expect Pavan to remain in South Africa for approximately five more weeks as he continues rehabilitation for his shoulder and back while allowing other injuries and bruises to heal. Only after that period will he be assessed to determine when it is safe for him to travel home.

Meanwhile, financial support for the golfer and his family has also been building. Matt van Zandt, Pavan’s former teammate at Texas A&M, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical costs and recovery expenses during the unexpected ordeal.

The response has been overwhelming. In just six days, the fundraiser has already raised more than $81,000.

For now, Pavan’s focus remains firmly on recovery. Each small step forward, literally and figuratively, marks progress after a fall that could have changed everything. And as he continues his rehabilitation in South Africa, the veteran golfer is doing so surrounded by a wave of support from a global golf community eager to see him back on his feet.
