As communities across the United States consider proposals for new data centers, one issue continues to dominate public meetings and policy discussions: water consumption. Supporters argue that data centers bring jobs, tax revenue, and infrastructure investment, while critics often raise concerns about the impact these facilities could have on local water supplies. Yet another major water user rarely receives the same level of attention in these conversations: golf courses.
A closer comparison shows there is no simple answer to the question of which uses more water. The outcome depends on where a facility is located, how it operates, and what measurements are being used. Even so, national figures reveal a striking contrast.
National Water Use Comparison
Across the United States, golf courses consume far more water than data centers. According to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, golf courses use approximately 2.08 billion gallons of water every day for irrigation. By comparison, the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association estimates that U.S. data centers use about 449 million gallons of water per day, primarily for cooling computer servers.
That national comparison does not tell the entire story. Individual data centers can vary dramatically in water demand depending on size, location, and cooling technology. A 2026 report from the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association estimates that a medium-sized data center may use roughly 100 million gallons of water each year. Large hyperscale facilities, particularly during periods of heavy demand and hot weather, can consume between 1 million and 5 million gallons of water per day.
Most of that water is used in evaporative cooling systems, which are generally more energy-efficient than traditional air-cooling systems but require substantially more water. Some newer facilities have begun reducing freshwater consumption by installing closed-loop cooling systems or by relying on reclaimed wastewater rather than municipal drinking water.
Golf Courses Remain Major Water Users
Golf courses present a different water profile. Irrigation accounts for the overwhelming majority of their water use, with consumption varying according to climate, turf conditions, and course size. Nationally, golf course irrigation represents about 0.5% of all U.S. water withdrawals. Many courses obtain water from ponds, lakes, or on-site wells, while others supplement irrigation with municipal supplies or recycled water.
Water demands also differ by region. Courses located in arid climates generally require far more irrigation than those in areas with abundant rainfall, while local regulations and water availability can influence how much water a course is permitted to use.
Why Local Conditions Matter
The number of data centers continues to grow as demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence expands. While there are far fewer data centers than golf courses nationwide, individual facilities can become focal points of local concerns due to their concentrated water use, particularly during droughts or in regions where water resources are already under pressure.
The comparison illustrates that broad national statistics and local impacts are not always the same. Golf courses collectively consume more water nationwide than data centers, but individual data centers can require substantial daily water supplies depending on their design, cooling systems, and operating conditions. As more communities evaluate new development, understanding how each type of facility uses water provides a more complete picture than national totals alone.
