Donald Trump’s name unexpectedly surfaced at The Open Championship after a rules dispute involving Bryson DeChambeau reportedly escalated far beyond a normal conversation with tournament officials.
The controversy began during Friday’s second round at Royal Birkdale when DeChambeau was assessed a two-stroke penalty. Rules officials, along with The Open’s chief referee Grant Moir, determined that the American had illegally improved the line of his intended swing by stepping on long grass behind his ball. According to Moir, the decision was based on the Rules of Golf, and whether DeChambeau intended to alter the lie was not relevant to the ruling.
Bryson DeChambeau Reportedly Invokes Trump
DeChambeau strongly disagreed with that assessment and continued arguing the decision after returning to the tournament scoring area. As the discussion continued without any change to the ruling, R&A chief executive Mark Darbon reportedly joined the conversation.
It was during that exchange that DeChambeau allegedly made an unusual remark. According to reporting first published by Quadrilateral, DeChambeau said he would call former President Donald Trump if the matter was not resolved in his favor. There is no evidence that such a call ever took place, and the ruling ultimately remained unchanged. The R&A has declined to comment publicly on the reported reference to Trump.
The reported threat immediately drew attention because of DeChambeau’s well-known relationship with Trump. The two have played golf together on multiple occasions, and LIV Golf, where DeChambeau competes, has staged several tournaments at Trump-owned golf courses.
Comparisons to a Recent FIFA Controversy
Even so, the incident raised questions about what DeChambeau expected such a phone call could accomplish during one of golf’s oldest championships, especially with the event taking place in the United Kingdom under the authority of the R&A.
The story also invited comparisons to another recent sports controversy involving Trump. During the FIFA Club World Cup, U.S. men’s national team striker Folarin Balogun had his red card suspension rescinded after Trump spoke with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Although the decision generated considerable discussion, the United States ultimately went on to lose to Belgium anyway. That episode led some observers to joke that DeChambeau may have hoped for a similarly favorable intervention.
Whether DeChambeau was serious or simply expressing frustration remains unclear. What is certain is that tournament officials did not reverse their decision. The two-stroke penalty stood, and DeChambeau continued the championship under the adjusted score.
Penalty Stands as Tournament Ends
The incident also drew criticism from fellow competitor Rory McIlroy, who questioned how DeChambeau handled the dispute. While McIlroy did not have any role in the ruling itself, his comments added another layer to a tournament that already featured plenty of attention on the rules controversy.
When the championship concluded, the penalty proved costly but not decisive. DeChambeau finished tied for 14th place, ending the week six strokes behind champion Ryan Fox. The reported mention of Trump, however, became one of the tournament’s most talked-about off-course moments, overshadowing what otherwise would have been a routine rules dispute handled according to the governing body’s interpretation of the Rules of Golf.
