Well, chalk up another name on the injury list—Billy Horschel, the always-fiery competitor and eight-time PGA Tour winner, is officially out for the foreseeable future.

On Tuesday, the 38-year-old dropped a video update on X (formerly Twitter), letting fans know that he’s going under the knife next week for a lingering hip issue. That’s right—surgery is on deck, and Horschel’s season is hitting the pause button.

This didn’t come completely out of the blue. Horschel had already pulled out of the Zurich Classic late last month, citing the same hip injury. Now, it’s clear that rest wasn’t cutting it. “It’s an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar,” he said in the video, before adding that the procedure is a “preventative measure.”

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but Horschel seems optimistic. He’s already talking about rehab and a return to practice, hoping to get back in the swing of things by late summer or early fall. That timeline might sound quick, but this is a guy who’s never lacked for drive.

Ryder Cup Hopes Fade Again

Here’s the gut punch for fans hoping to see him in red, white, and blue: this injury ends his 2025 Ryder Cup aspirations. Despite being a steady name in the conversation, Horschel has never cracked the U.S. team lineup for the Ryder Cup. He’s always been a fringe candidate for a captain’s pick, and this year was no different.

Though he hadn’t locked in a spot, his chances weren’t nothing. Sitting at 16th in the U.S. standings, he had shown flashes of brilliance, including a contending run at the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon. But five missed cuts in 2025 and a strokes-gained rank of 67th told a tale of inconsistency.

Bright Spots and a TGL Win

That said, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Horschel had notched two top-10s this year and was riding some good momentum from late 2024. He also played a starring role in the debut season of TGL, the tech-forward golf league backed by Tiger and Rory. His team, Atlanta Drive, took home the championship, giving Horschel another trophy for the mantle.
