Ben James Seizes Weekend Lead At World Wide Technology Championship

Ben James took control of the 2026 World Wide Technology Championship on Friday night in Los Cabos. The rookie’s aggressive 64 (8-under) moved him to 129 (15-under) after 36 holes at El Cardonal at Diamante, a course designed by Tiger Woods. Darkness forced a suspension of play at 5:48 p.m. local time, leaving 12 golfers on the course to finish their rounds on Saturday morning. James now holds a one-shot lead heading into the weekend, according to Sportsnet.ca reporting from the field.

During the second round, James made five straight birdies around the turn. He capped the round with a final birdie on the ninth hole. Since turning professional out of Virginia this summer, this performance represents his 14th round of 65 or lower across just 13 tournaments. This victory would secure a spot on the 2028 Championship Series under the new model and move the team into the top 50 in world rankings.

Adapting to Professional Pressure

James acknowledged the shift in scoring ability required at this level compared to his collegiate days. “It’s weird, in college I was kind of someone that would shoot 2, 3 under every time out and would have trouble going low,” James said. “But you adapt to your surroundings as humans, so I guess out here that’s what you have to do. I’ve been rolling it well and playing well, so nice to be shooting some low numbers.”

“I’m doing everything right,” James said. “But for me, I’m just trying to win each shot, just do the best I can for each golf shot and not thinking ahead and just do the best I can. And as I say, winning the shot at hand.”

Malnati Chases Contention

Peter Malnati sat tied for the lead until a critical error on the par-3 ninth hole. He fell short of the green and missed a 12-foot par putt, concluding his round of 64. The missed opportunity left him one shot behind James. “I work really hard on my game and I haven’t had tons to show for that lately,” Malnati said. “So to not be in that position coming down the stretch on a Friday where … I don’t even have to think about the cut line, I can think about playing golf. That was fun.”

Zac Blair shot a 68 to sit three shots behind the leader. Sudarshan Yellamaraju of Mississauga, Ont.James was six shots ahead, He is the top Canadian at 10 under. Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., finished at 9 under, while Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., was at 7 under. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., also made the cut at 5 under. Defending champion Ben Griffin and fellow North Carolina Tar Heel Ryan Gerard headline the field, with Griffin being one of six past champions competing in Cabo, per Central Oregon Daily.
