Tommy Fleetwood didn’t get the storybook ending he wanted in Memphis — but he did lock in a pretty big prize.

The Englishman entered the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship with a one-shot lead, chasing that elusive first PGA Tour victory. Instead, a late stumble left him one stroke shy of a playoff, and it was Justin Rose who walked away with the win.

But Monday brought good news: both Fleetwood and Rose have officially secured their spots on Team Europe for next month’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

Fleetwood will be making his fourth straight Ryder Cup appearance, while Rose returns for his sixth. European captain Luke Donald celebrated the announcement on X, posting a photo of the pair with the caption, “Amazing to have both of these guys back on the Team. They bring so much both on and off the course. Let’s Go!” Fleetwood replied simply: “Yes!!! Very proud.”

As it stands, the top six in the European points standings — Rory McIlroy, Rose, Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sepp Straka — are all set for automatic qualification when the standings lock on August 24.

The Race For the Final Spots

Behind them, Shane Lowry, Rasmus Højgaard, Ludvig Åberg, and Viktor Hovland sit in good position for captain’s picks if they don’t clinch an automatic berth. LIV’s Jon Rahm is down at 22nd in points but is considered a lock for selection, leaving players like Matt Wallace, Matt Fitzpatrick, Thomas Detry, and Aaron Rai battling for potentially just one or two spots.

For Fleetwood, the wait for a PGA Tour breakthrough continues — but with another Ryder Cup on the horizon, he won’t have to wait long for a chance to deliver on one of golf’s biggest stages.
