In a year marked by innovation, resilience, and an undeniable spirit of community, the PGA TOUR has once again recognized the tournaments that exemplify excellence across every dimension of the professional golf experience. And leading the pack for 2025, unsurprisingly but still impressively, is the WM Phoenix Open, which has earned the coveted “Event of the Year” title for the sixth time, and the fourth in just five years.

The “People’s Open,” as it’s long been affectionately known, continues to elevate its already storied legacy. Held at TPC Scottsdale since 1987, this tournament isn’t just about golf; it’s a cultural event. In 2025, the Thunderbirds, the long-standing host organization, operated under the mantra “Better, Not Bigger,” a strategic vision that emphasized fan access, sustainability, and thoughtful innovation over spectacle alone.

And it paid off.

Expanded walkways, reimagined hospitality zones, and open-to-all fan areas created an atmosphere where both die-hard golf enthusiasts and casual attendees felt equally welcome. At the same time, key traditions remained untouched, including free admission early in the week, complimentary parking, and beloved local food vendors, ensuring the event’s identity remained intact while progressing forward.

PGA TOUR Sustainability That Sets a Global Standard

The WM Phoenix Open also maintained its distinction as the largest zero-waste sporting event in the world. Powered by solar energy, reusable signage, and community-driven initiatives, the tournament diverted 100% of waste from landfills. WM’s Working for Tomorrow Fund didn’t just talk about impact; it delivered, raising nearly half a million dollars for environmental and hunger relief causes.

The event’s commitment to sustainability is not performative; it’s foundational. Every detail, from waste management to charitable donations, reflects a larger mission: to show what responsible, purpose-driven sport can look like at the highest level.

Resilience and Heart: Honoring the Spirit of the Game

Elsewhere, the PGA TOUR’s new “Spirit of the PGA TOUR Award” recognized the extraordinary efforts of TGR Live and the Century Club of San Diego. When wildfires ravaged the area surrounding Riviera Country Club, these organizations stepped in and relocated The Genesis Invitational to Torrey Pines, no small feat given the circumstances. Their grit and collaboration turned adversity into inspiration, echoing the very values the PGA TOUR strives to uphold.

Additional honors rounded out the celebration. RBC Heritage won “Most Fan First Event,” reflecting its unmatched hospitality and charm. The BMW Championship took “Best Special Event” with its fusion of music and community. The John Deere Classic earned “Best Charitable Impact” after raising a staggering $16.9 million. And THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson redefined sponsor integration, merging Korean culture, cuisine, and generosity into one unforgettable week.

Together, these tournaments exemplify what happens when world-class sport meets community, creativity, and heart. The PGA TOUR’s “Best Of” awards are more than recognition; they are a blueprint for how the game continues to evolve, inspire, and lead.
